The Mount Vernon-Lisbon cross country team opened their 2023 season with the Kirk Schmaltz Invite in Ames Monday, August 28.
The Mustang boys took 10th place while the girls scored seventh.
Norwalk took first place in the boys’ competition with a score of 86.
Grady Olberding finished in sixth place in the competition to lead the MV-L boys, completing the race with a time of 15.43.4.
“Grady Olberding did a wonderful job to get sixth overall and help the boys finish 10th against a loaded field,” said head coach Kory Swart.
“Sawyer Feldman has shown dramatic improvement since last year,” the coach added, while noting Feldman had set a new personal record — by about two minutes — in the race, while Feldman ran “almost four minutes faster than he did at the same race last year.”
The fastest time in the boys’ run came from Ankeny’s Ethan Zuber, who completed the 5k in 15:11.5.
GirlsAnkeny took first place in the girls’ side of the event, a race where the Mustangs took seventh and Kiersten Swart was the team’s standard-bearer with a 25th-place finish and a time of 20:16.7.
“Kiersten Swart did a great job leading the way to get 25th place and grab the last spot on the award stand,” the coach continued.
“Maeve Krogmann had a nice summer of training this year, and it showed with a personal record in her first meet of the season, helping the girls to a seventh place finish in the team standings,” said Swart.
“There was some pretty stiff competition at the Ames meet, but that will only help us moving forward.”
Claire Helmers of Ames nabbed the fastest time in the 5k run, finishing in a time of 17:44.8.
