The Lions had a lot to crow about at the state track tournament.
The boys team finished as team champions in 1A, setting four new school records, two state records, and numerous personal records in an effort head coach Lonnie Speidel heralded as “a testament to the talent on this team.”
“It was a total team effort this weekend,” Speidel said. “We had some bumps early on Thursday, but the guys stayed the course and finished strong on Saturday.
“I couldn’t be happier for this team and especially the seniors. They have been close the last couple of years, and go out on to,” said Speidel.
The girls came in 15th place out of more than 50 teams, even taking a championship of their own in the 4×100 meter relay with a season-best time of 50.11. Peyton Robinson, Ava Czarnecki, Brynn Epperly, and Addy Happel comprised the championship team.
“It’s been an honor and privilege to coach such fine young men and women this year and throughout my career,” said Lions head coach Casey Baxa following his final event as coach of the team.
“I’m mighty blessed to have helped build such a powerful program and facility in my own hometown that I am extremely proud of. I hope to be able to stay involved coaching in someway, I just don’t want to deal with the stuff the head coach has to deal with,” Baxa said. “It’s been a heck of a ride.
“I’d like to also throw a plug in for my assistant coach, Brett Epperly. He is a great coach, cares about the kids, and would do anything for them. He’s been unbelievable to work with, and I can’t thank him enough. Hopefully he gets an opportunity to lead the girls program.”
