The City of Mount Vernon will not be actively enforcing nuisance requirements during the month of May.
City administrator Chris Nosbisch said that is the compromise he is reaching this year to let citizens participate in No Mow May efforts if they choose to do so.
“There are probably less than half a dozen citizens who will truly take advantage of this, but we didn’t have time to get a formal program and outlines for No Mow May this year,” Nosbisch said.
If there are a significant amount of people violating the nuisances in May, Nobisch said the city may choose to enforce the ordinance in the middle of the month.
Nosbisch said that for the city parks, it proves a little harder to do.
“We have to maintain the grass on the ball fields, especially baseball diamonds and soccer fields,” Nosbisch said.
Council member Debra Herrmann asked about the city’s application of herbicides and weed killers.
Nosbisch said most of those treatments are applied to the ball fields in the parks only, and that other weed maintenance in city parks is taken care of by staff during the summer.
