The Mount Vernon girls basketball team continued its ascent last week, going 2-1 in a five-day stretch and improving their record to 10-6.
Still, the team finds itself in the middle of the WaMaC-East conference pack.
Monday, Jan. 16Monday the team hosted the West Branch Bears, sending the visiting team home with a 47-25 loss.
The game was relatively close until the third quarter, when the Mustangs piled on the Bears by a 19-1 margin. A 14-11 fourth period, dominated by the Bears, was not enough to reverse the damage.
Lilly See, a senior for the Mustangs, led all scorers in the game with 13 points. See additionally added seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal to the winning effort.
Chloe Meester, a sophomore, contributed 10 points and three boards.
Junior Brynley Rasmussen posted eight points on 3-6 shooting.
Kameron Brand notched six rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Tuesday, Jan. 17 The Solon Spartans visited the Mustangs the following evening.
The first-place Spartans pulled off a narrow 56-50 win.
Meester doubled her output from the night before, scoring 20 points and collecting five rebounds.
See contributed 14 points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Friday, Jan. 20The Mustangs defeated conference foe West Delaware 47-42 on the road to close their week.
The Hawks are a spot behind Mount Vernon, though the Mustangs enjoy a comfortable lead over them.
The home team switched up their defensive strategy from games previous to a 2-3 zone, taking the Mustangs out of their rhythm early on, and leading to the team committing 14 turnovers in the first half.
West Delaware saw their opening, and charged ahead to a 20-13 lead with four minutes remaining in the second quarter.
However, Rasmussen took the lead in a 13-2 offensive for the Mustangs, contributing six points in the first half’s remaining moments that saw the visiting Mount Vernon team lead 26-22.
Meester drew the third foul from Hawks star Brooke Krogmann in the third quarter, clearing the path for the Mustangs to go on a 10-2 run and place themselves ahead 37-27.
West Delaware made it a game again late in the fourth quarter, getting as close as three points at 45-42, when Courtney Franck stepped up to make both shots of a one-and-one to put her team just out of reach.
Peyton Simpson, Rasmussen, and See each scored in double-figures. Rasmussen and See posted 12 points while Simpson put up 11. Rasmussen added seven rebounds to the effort.
The team shot 43 percent from behind the three-point arc, and forced West Delaware into committing 21 turnovers.
The Mustangs will next be in action Friday, Jan. 27 when they host Independence. Junior varsity begins at 6:00 p.m. while varsity will follow at 7:30.
