JanuaryLibby Dix placed fifth at the girls’ state wrestling tournament and Maddie Plotz finished in eighth place, in late January at Coralville’s XTream Arena. Following the state wrestling tournament, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced that girls’ wrestling would be a sanctioned sport beginning 2022-23 school year.
February Maddie Plotz signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Iowa West Reivers next year.
Lisbon qualified 11 wrestlers and Mount Vernon qualified eight for district wrestling tournaments. From those numbers, Mount Vernon qualified three for the state tournament – Jackson Jaspers, Henry Ryan and Clark Younggreen – and Lisbon qualified 10 – Quincy Happel, Brandon Paez, Tiernan Boots, Cade Siebrecht, Indy Harbaugh, Lincoln Holub, Max Kohl, Jamien Moore, Indy Ferguson and Wyatt Smith.
Mount Vernon girls’ advanced to the first round of playoffs, with a game against Independence Feb. 12. The team advanced to the second round of playoffs with a win against Independence, 48-31. They bowed out in a game against Roland Story, 40-29.
Lisbon girls’ advanced to compete against Highland in post-season competitions Thursday, Feb. 10, butbowed out in the first round of playoffs.
Mount Vernon boys’ advanced to postseason with a game against Mount Pleasant Monday, Feb. 21. The boys bowed out in a 60-55 loss.
Lisbon boys advanced to postseason with a game against Midland Monday, Feb. 14. The boys were tied for the conference title in the Tri-Rivers Conference. The team bowed out in the second round of playoffs to Springville, 62-60.
Lisbon placed second at the state dual tournament. Lisbon had two state champions at the state tournament, with Paez and Siebrecht each claiming their second state titles. Kohl placed third, Happel and Holub fourth, Boots fifth, Smith sixth and Moore eighth.
Mount Vernon had two place at the state wrestling tournament – Jackson Jaspers in fourth and Younggreen in sixth place.
The Mount Vernon archery team participated in the state meet Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6.

AprilThe Mount Vernon boys track team qualified athletes for the Drake Relays. Participating in the relays were the 4×100 team (Jackson Rhomberg, Leo Appleton, Caden Stimmel, and Trent Pitlik), the 4×400 team (Jensen Meeker, Zach Fall, Owen Brase, and Brady Erickson), and the distance medley team of Jackson Rhomberg, Brady Erickson, Trenton Pitlik, and Carson Sansenbach. The distance medley ran a 3:37.66 (season best) and finished 18th. The 4×100 team “set the school record in 44.02, and finished 29th. The team running the 4×400 —Meeker, Fall, Brase, and Erickson ran a season best 3:25.22 to qualify for the finals, and then went on to finish seventh overall.
The Mount Vernon girls track team advanced the 400-meter squad of Emma Meester, Kate Dougherty, Laura Swart and Liz Dougherty to the Drake Relays.
Lisbon boys’ and girls’ track team sent 16 athletes to the Drake Relays between the two teams, a record for Lisbon to send to the tournament. Kole Becker became the first champion for Lisbon at Drake Relays, with a 53.49 400 hurdles time. He was also second in long jump and 110 high hurdles.
Mount Vernon’s Maia Bentley scored her 100th goal in a match Tuesday, April 26.
MayLisbon qualified a whopping 27 events to the state track meet, nine of them from the girls’ team and 18 from the boys’ teams. The Lisbon boys placed third at state, with Becker being the Class 1A champion in the 110-meter high hurdles and long jump. Luke Czarnecki placed second in the high jump, and the team of Tiernan Boots, Kaden Harrer, Jamien Moore and Baylor Speidel also placed second. The Lisbon girls placed ninth at state. The girls’ 4×800 meter squad of Gabi Moehlman, Addie Clark, Maeve Krogman and Lourdes Mason set another school record with 10:06.06 for fourth.
Mount Vernon boys’ qualified nine events for the state track meet. The Mount Vernon boys placed 17th at state. The team had a first place finish in the 4×400 by Jensen Meeker, Zach Fall, Brady Erickson and Owen Brase. The 4×800 meter squad of Fall, Meeker, Alex Fencl and Carson Sansenbach placed fifth.
Mount Vernon girls track qualified seven events for the state meet. Mount Vernon girls placed 13th at state. Libby Dix placed fifth in the discus throw, and the relay squad of Kate Dougherty, Elizabeth Quam, Swart and Emma Meester finished in fifth with a time of 4:05.62. The girls 4×800 meter relay squad of Meester, Kameron Brand, Swart and Abbie Moss finished third with a time of 9:46.47. The girls distance medley ofQuam, Dougherty, Meester and Swart finished fourth with 4:13.78.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon girls’ soccer was the conference champion. The team finished the season 17-2 with a second-round loss to North Scott Thursday, May 26.
The Lisbon girls golf squad finished fourth at the state golf meet.
JulyLisbon powered through the playoffs to end at the state softball tournament at Fort Dodge. They bowed out against Twin City 2-0 in extra innings in the first round, and lost 7-1 against Newell Fonda in the consolation round.
Lisbon advanced to the state baseball tournament in Carroll, where they bowed out in the first round against Mason City Newman Catholic, 3-2.
Mount Vernon softball won the Class 3A state title, with a 10-5 victory over Davenport Assumption.
The 12U boys soccer team was champion in the AYSO Cedar Rapids and Dubuque Regions.
SeptemberMount Vernon beat Solon in football for the first time in almost 19 years, in a 17-14 showdown Friday, Sept. 2, in Mount Vernon.
OctoberMount Vernon clinched the volleyball conference tournament title for the fourth straight year. The team also advanced to the state volleyball tournament in Coralville, but fell in the semifinal match to Davenport Assumption.
The Lisbon football team ended with a Friday, Oct. 21, loss to the East Buchanan Buccaneers 44-14.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon Cross Country competed at the state tournament Oct. 29. The girls team finished in fourth place, while the boys came in ninth.
Lisbon volleyball’s season ended with a loss to Sumner Fredericksburg in the Class 2A championship match.

The Mount Vernon football team continued their undefeated season up to the Class 3A championship game, where they lost to last year’s defending champions, the Harlan Cyclones.
