The Mount Vernon varsity girls basketball squad picked up a key win and a little momentum going into their winter break, defeating Independence Tuesday, Dec. 20, on the road, 49-24.
The win improved the Mustangs record to 5-4, and was the team’s first east divisional WaMaC matchup.
The visiting Mount Vernon team jumped out of the gate with a 9-1 lead, but the quarter ended with their lead shrinking to three with an 11-8 lead.
“As was the case all night, we defended well throughout the game and created a lot of quality shot opportunities,” said Mustangs head coach Nate Sanderson.

“We were also encouraged with our ability to score in a variety of ways despite not shooting well from the perimeter. Our post players continue to develop confidence around the rim, and we are gradually getting better at feeding them in a space where they can be successful inside,” the coach said.
Peyton Simpson led both teams in scoring with 16 points. The junior also pulled in eight rebounds and a steal.
Fellow junior Brynley Rasmussen contributed 10 points and five blocks in the victory.
Chloe Meester, a sophomore for the Mustangs, scored eight points and a game-leading 10 rebounds to go with three blocks.
“There’s a lot to feel good about right now going into the Christmas break,” reflected Sanderson.
“The players continue to work hard, and are showing signs of improvement in each game. We are looking forward to a few days off before the schedule ramps up again after break,” he said.
The Mustangs can next be caught in action Tuesday, Jan. 3 on their home court when they take on Monticello at 7:15 p.m.
