The Lisbon Lions wrestling squad picked up a win at home Thursday night before placing third at Saturday’s Mount Vernon Invitational.
The wins at home against East Buchanan, Maquoketa Valley, and Starmont improved the team’s dual record to 5-0.
“We are wrestling really well overall,” said Lions head coach Brad Smith.
Despite the team’s third place finish at Mount Vernon, they still finished with five champions in Brandon Paez (120), Tiernan Boots (138), Indy Harbaugh (145), Matthias Kohl (182), and Wyatt Smith (285). It was Paez’s fourth Mount Vernon Invitational championship.
The Lions also finished with third, fifth, and sixth place performances. Smith said the team was down a few wrestlers from illness and injuries.
“We wrestled as well as we were capable of in the final round,” he said.
“We felt even though we didn’t win the tournament, Lisbon dominated the championship round,” said Smith.
On Thursday against East Buchanan, the Lions had wins from Wyatt Smith (285), Jackson Knapp (113), Cade Happel (120), Brandon Paez (126), Tiernan Boots (138), Indy Harbaugh (145), Junior Krob (152), Matthias Kohl (182), Indy Ferguson (220), Gavin Carmer (152).
There were also wins aganst Maquoketa Valley by Ferguson, Smith, Knapp, Paez, Happel, Krob, Tiernan Boots, Harbaugh, Henry Neymeyer (160), Gage Holub (170), Kohl, and Jonah Reiling (285).
The Lions had wins against Starmont from Ferguson, Smith, Paez, Happel, Krob, Tiernan Boots, Neymeyer, Holub and Kohl.
