Cornell’s women’s basketball team returned to action from a short holiday break Saturday night, falling 71-36 to the University of Dubuque inside the Stoltz Sports Center.
Rachael Adewusi came off the bench to lead the Rams (1-4) in scoring with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Cornell totaled 25 bench points for the game, including seven from Mia Murray and six from A’ryn Jackson.
Dubuque (3-4) made it tough on the Rams offensively, limiting Cornell to 27.7-percent shooting and coming away with 28 points off 26 turnovers. The Spartans owned a 41-26 advantage on the boards.
The Rams were tied 12-12 before Dubuque ran off 12 unanswered points to build a 24-12 lead midway through the second quarter. The Spartans increased the margin to 37-19 by halftime.
Murray and Jackson sank two 3-pointers apiece for the Rams, who finished 4-of-24 from beyond the arc.
Ani’ja Simmons provided eight points. Madison Wauters posted team-highs of seven rebounds and three assists.
Coming up – The Rams open Midwest Conference play Tuesday against Illinois College (1-3) in Jacksonville, Ill. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
Cornell is picked second and Illinois College third in the MWC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
