Cornell’s Aaron Davidson added another medal to his impressive career collection at Saturday’s Midwest Region Men’s Cross Country Championships.
The fifth-year sensation secured all-region status for the second consecutive season with a 30th-place showing in a large 230-man field at Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course.
Davidson covered the eight-kilometer layout in 25:43, safely putting himself inside the all-region cutoff by 15 seconds. The reigning two-time individual Midwest Conference champion took 25th at regionals last year.
Davidson has an outside chance at an NCAA berth, awarded to the top seven individuals from each region not part of an NCAA-qualifying team. Qualifiers will be announced Sunday.
Coach Jerry Frawley’s MWC championship squad finished 11th out of 32 teams with 328 points. The loaded field featured five nationally-ranked programs, including third-rated and region champion North Central (41 points).
The Rams secured a point in the 2022-23 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series. They defeated rival Coe in head-to-head dual scoring, 16-39, and pulled within 5-4 of the Kohawks through nine competitions.
All five of Cornell’s point scorers finished in the top one-half of Saturday’s field. Following Davidson was sophomore Gabe Soda in 53rd place with a time of 26:21.
Sophomore Caleb Schopen ran 26:49 for 67th. Freshman Thomas Coble finished 80th (27:11) in his regional debut. Sophomore Isaak Hutchings was 102nd (27:30). Junior Noah Lutzke came in 105th (27:32) and freshman Brodie Callahan 123rd (27:53).
Wartburg’s Christopher Collet (25:04) nipped North Central’s Braden Nicholson by less than two seconds for the individual title.
Women’s XCCornell sophomore frontrunner Katie Lammers finished in the top one-third in her regional debut at Saturday’s Midwest Region Championships at Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course.
Lammers crossed 65th out of 204 total finishers, covering the six-kilometer course in 24:16. The all-Midwest Conference performer paced Cornell’s young lineup for the fifth time this season.
The Rams scored 549 points for 18th place in the 29-team field, which included four nationally-ranked programs.
Cornell defeated rival Coe in head-to-head dual scoring, 20-33, to claim a point in the 2022-23 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series. Coupled with Cornell’s point earned in the men’s race, the Rams now trail Coe 5-4 through nine competitions.
Junior first-time regional competitor Carly Small clocked a season-best 6K mark of 24:40 and finished 83rd overall. Freshman Alyza Koppes and senior Annika Sutter also ran their best times of the fall. Koppes took 112th (25:36) and Sutter 146th (27:32).
Sophomore Elinor Ascher-Handlin brought in Cornell’s fifth score, placing 155th in 28:07. Freshman Grace Parises was 175th (30:36).
No. 2 Wartburg edged No. 1 Chicago for the team championship, 36-45. Kassie Parker of Loras was crowned individual champion in 21:14.
