Cornell’s men’s basketball team dominated the glass and rolled to an 84-62 home-opening victory over Eureka Sunday afternoon in the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.
Senior center Logan Sharp recorded a double-double, snaring a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 10 points. Jordan Magnani and Zach Ingle shared team-high scoring honors with 21 points apiece, while Jayden Meeker netted 11 in only 15 minutes.
Magnani hit 9-of-15 field goals, grabbed nine rebounds and dished four assists. Ingle buried three 3-pointers and also handed out four assists.
Cornell outscored the Red Devils in bench points, 18-4. Julian Cleary had seven points, Izic Mackey six and Jaxson Herring five.
The Rams were near perfect from the foul line, sinking 14-of-15 attempts. Eureka went 3-of-3 from the stripe.
Cornell led 43-30 at halftime. The Rams pulled away early in the second half, using a 19-8 spurt capped off by a Cleary 3-pointer.
Earlier in the week, Cornell lost against Coe, 68-67.
Ingle 3-pointer knotted the contest at 62-62. After a pair of Coe free throws,Meeker converted a conventional 3-point play that pulled the Rams ahead 65-64.
Sharp’s offensive rebound and putback gave Cornell its last lead at 67-66 with 45 seconds to go. The Kohawks (1-0) pushed back in front, 68-67, on a driving basket with 12 seconds remaining.
Cornell’s shot in the lane to win it was blocked just before time expired and the Kohawks escaped.
The Kohawks earned a point in the 2022-23 Bremner Cup All-Sports Series and now lead the head-to-head competition, 5-2.
Cornell’s all-conference guard Jordan Magnani led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. The fifth-year senior also collected five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Ingle drained four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Meeker tallied 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sharp added eight points and six boards.
