Cornell’s No. 1 player Makayla Johnson picked up three victories Saturday as the Rams split two duals during a pair of Midwest Conference road matches.
The Rams fell 8-1 to Lawrence in the day’s opening meet. They came back for an 8-1 triumph at Ripon in the afternoon match. Cornell moved to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in the MWC.
Johnson scored Cornell’s lone win against Lawrence, breezing by Margot Connor 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
The Rams swept all six singles bouts against Ripon, including Johnson’s three-set win (6-0, 2-6, 6-4) over Tia Endrizzi. Ashley Mink (6-4, 7-6), Audrey Small (6-4, 6-2), Ashley Drake (6-4, 6-3) and Emma Shipley (6-4, 6-3) were straight-set winners, while Kylie Jacobson prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 3 position.
Johnson and Small beat Ripon 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Cornell’s No. 3 pair of Jacobson and Drake prevailed 8-7. Mink and Josalin McKeever were edged by an 8-6 score.
Coming up – Cornell plays host to Concordia Chicago at noon on Sept. 25.
