Jacqueline Briggs Martin and her co-author June Jo Lee read their new book Sandor Katz and the Tiny Wild in uptown Mount Vernon Wednesday, Sept. 14.
Phillip Lee, publisher of Readers to Eaters series of books, was also present
Phillip explained that the idea of Readers to Eaters series was a great way to connect young readers to different foods and different food styles, and a way to touch at issues including climate change and other issues that impact growing food in the United States.
June and Martin read from their book, gave a sample of a kimchi and sausage dish for attendees, and demonstrated how simple it is to maake kimchi for those who would want to make the dish as well.
“One of the things I wrestled with when writing this book was my history with kimchi,” June explained. “Growing up, I was ashamed of who I was because we’d eat things like kimchi that other kids didn’t eat. As we started doing research for this book, however, I discovered kimchi is essentially the same process that goes into making sauerkraut. That helped me bridge back to not being ashamed of making kimchi.”
