MVLCT is thrilled to announce auditions for “The Drowsy Chaperone” by Bob Martin and Don McKeller with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison.
With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life in his apartment and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.
Hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical,” The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre.
Auditions will be held May 15 and 16 at 7 p.m. at First Street Community Center in Mount Vernon.
Please prepare 16 to 32 measures from classical musical theater repertoire to be sung a capella. A comedic selection is preferred. Please also be prepared to do a cold reading from the script and a brief movement combination with our choreographer.
Callbacks may be held on May 17 if necessary.
While we would rather see you in person, you may also submit a video audition beginning May 1. Audition videos may be sent to [email protected] They will be accepted until 5 p.m. May 13. Please be available for an in-person callback on May 17 if you choose to submit a video.
You may fill out an audition form the night of your in person audition, or you may complete our online audition form ahead of time.
Performance dates are July 15, 16, 17, 22 and 23.
The show is being directed by John Zbanek Hill, music director Leslie Hyland and choreographer Becca Clayton.
