The Mount Vernon boys varsity basketball team dropped a home game Tuesday, Feb. 15, falling 47-45 to the visiting Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks.
The Mustangs had a slight 23-17 advantage going into halftime, and had expanded the lead to 14 going into the fourth period, “but Waverly turned us over seven times in a row,” said assistant coach Derek Roberts.
Mount Vernon still held a razor-thin lead at 45-44 in the game’s final seconds, but sophomore Go-Hawk Cole “Marsh hit a three as time expired for the win,” Roberts said.
Brady Erickson, a junior, led the team in scoring with 16, a strong showing for the junior, who averages 9.7 points per game. Erickson tacked on four rebounds and two assists to his performance for the night.
Senior Mustang Ryan Naeve added nine points, two rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
Sophomore Evan Brase led the Mustangs in rebounds, with six. As a team, Mount Vernon nabbed 21, with the Go-Hawks claiming 17.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 10-11, while Waverly-Shell Rock climbed to 13-8.
