Lisbon named two champions in Brandon Paez (120) and Cade Siebrecht (138) at the state tournament this year. This was Siebrecht’s and Paez’s second state championships.
“The competition at the state tournament gets better every year,” Smith said. “The kids are more technical now. There are so many different styles of wrestling, so you never know what you’re going to see when you step out on the mat.”
“In the last ranking, we were ranked fourth in the traditional tournament. But we showed them that we were a little bit tougher that weekend.”
Smith noted that Lisbon qualifying 10 for state was the second most the Lions have ever qualified for the tournament. The Lions qualified 11 last year.
This year’s eighth place winners also tie the school records set in 2021 and 1990.
“That’s kind of neat, too,” Smith said.
As for getting two wrestlers as champions this year, Smith called that accomplishment neat that two got into the finals, both winning their second state championships.
Max Kohl placed third at the state tournament.
Quincy Happel (126) and Lincoln Holub (152) placed fourth at the state meet, Tiernan Boots (132) in fifth, Smith (285) placed sixth and Jamien Moore placed eighth.
Indy Harbaugh and Indy Ferguson both wrestled in the meet, but were unable to place at the state meet.
“We’re really happy with what we accomplished,” Smith said. “There are a lot of teams that would love to have a second place trophy.”
