The Mount Vernon girls basketball team improved to 5-6 Tuesday, Jan. 4, with a 60-49 victory over their hosts, the Maquoketa Cardinals.
Sophomore Peyton Simpson led the charge with 23 points in the contest, a career-high.
Liz Dougherty notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“We came out of break with an impressive win at Maquoketa on Tuesday,” said Mustangs head coach Nate Sanderson.
“Defensively, we held Maquoketa to just 35 percent shooting on the night, and for the first time this season, we did not allow any points in transition.”
“As we begin the second half of the season, we continue to show tremendous improvement. After losing our first four games of the season, we are now 5-2 in our last seven games.
“After enjoying some time off over break, we celebrated the holidays with a white elephant gift exchange and attended a hockey game at the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. We also scrimmaged at Bettendorf and competed in the 15th annual Shooting Olympics during practice,” Sanderson said.
Friday night, the team will travel to face preseason WaMaC East favorite Solon.
“We are looking forward to the challenge,” said Sanderson.
