New street sweeper purchase made
The City of Mount Vernon will be purchasing a new street sweeper for $35,000.
The city’s current street sweeper has been retired, as it is barely operable at the moment and parts to replace it are now obsolete. The newer model of street sweeper, according to Eldon Downs, is hydraulic driven.
“I think the purchase is a good move for us,” Downs said.
The city uses the street sweeper for roughly 30 days out of the year. City administrator Chris Nosbisch said that the difference in renting versus purchasing was the equivalent of three years of renting the piece of equipment from a dealer and transportation to the community.
Mount Vernon approves additional pool expenses
The City also made some additional pool expenses. The first was a replacement of media for one of the filters for the pool at a roughly $2,600 expense. The media for the filter has not been replaced in more than 10 years, and city administrator Chris Nosbisch said that using more expensive media for the filter will help at the pool.
The second expense was replacing some aged PVC pipes near the gutters that need to be replaced. That cost is $16,006.
“We didn’t realize how hard those PVC pipes would be for staff to possibly replace on their own until we did a walkthrough, and realized it would be better for professionals to replace them,” Nosbisch said.
Citizen said traffic issues improved
Cynthia Roberts Cotton along Palisades Road said that traffic conditions along Palisades Road have improved, thanks to the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Police Department placing one of the mobile speed trailers on the west end of Palisades Road approaching the intersection near the school complex.
“It has made a difference in the speed of several vehicles,” Cotton said.
She wondered if moving the trailer to the east side of Palisades for a few weeks would also help reduce speed there. Another step might be for an officer to make a presence known in the area on occasion.
The school is currently working on their traffic study that was completed in May, with action steps to be presented to the board in the future.
