One step back and one step forward for the Lisbon baseball team this season. And last week was no exception.
On Monday, June 23, the Lions dropped a game at Midland 13-3 in five innings. The second game was suspended and finished Wednesday, June 25.
Midland scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning of Game 2 on Monday, then the Lions tied it up in the top of the sixth, 11-11 on Wednesday back at Wyoming Fairgrounds. Midland scored the game winner in the bottom of the sixth.
The Eagles are the first-round district opponent for the Lions in Class 1A Substate 4 on Saturday, July 5, so Lisbon kept a few pitchers in reserve. (The winner gets a shot at No. 7 North Linn in a district semifinal July 8).
Luke Robinson had a double and 4 RBIs. Wesley Sadler and Carew Kamaus each hit a double.
On Tuesday, June 24, Lisbon beat Springville, 12-0 in four innings. Kamaus gave up just three hits over four innings and hit 2-for-3. Ian Whittenbaugh and Luke Robinson had doubles, and Wesley Sadler had two RBIs.
“Carew is always around the strike zone and minimizes his pitch count,” Coach Kamaus said. “As a fielder, you’ve always got to be on your toes.”
The Lions were able to finish their Midland game Wednesday because games against New London and Northeast were both cancelled. A Thursday game at Central City was also canceled, since the Wildcats don’t have a varsity team.
Lisbon ended the week on a high note, beating a River Valley team on their field, topping Durant, 12-4.
Trailing 4-3, the Lions scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning. They were helped by 15 walks.
Bryce Boots had two hits and two RBIs, and Dakota Clark and Whittenbaugh each had two RBIs.
Clark got the pitching win with three innings of two-hit ball.
“We were very patient at the plate,” Kamaus said. “They ran through five different guys on the mound, and we hit some balls hard.”
