There is something almost magical about what the Mount Vernon baseball team did last week. The Mustangs rallied with seven runs in the seventh inning to beat Clear Creek Amana, 11-9, on Monday, June 16, in Tiffin.
MountVernon(10-9,7-7 WaMaC East) then won the second game, 5-0, to complete the sweep.
“That was unique,” Mount Vernon coach Charles Chatman said. “We got a little help. They walked a few guys. But the guys made good contact and it was nice to come back and win one of those games.”
There were hits up and down the lineup in the Game 1 win. Garet Swartzendruber hit 4-for-5 with a double, Erik Lamb was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, Michael Ryan had two hits and two RBIs, Cole Thurn had two hits, Porter Chatman hit 3-for-3 with a double, and Cael Foreman had two RBIs.

“Cael closed out game one, got the save, but only threw eight pitches,” Chatman said. “He was really good.”
Offensively, Swartzendruber hit 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Game 2. Kellen Haverback hit 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, Thurn hit 2-for-3 and Chatman had two RBIs.

On Thursday, June 19, Mount Vernon beat Williamsburg 5-2, then lost, 7-6, at Ash Park.
In the opener, Lamb hit a two-run home run.
“You don’t see many homers at Cornell by high school kids,” Chatman said. “It was a good way to start the game.”
