Lisbon girls’ golf brought home a trophy from the Class 3A State Meet.
“Anytime you come home with hardware, I would chalk it up as a successful season,” Lisbon coach Andy Kahl said.
The Lions finished seventh in a loaded state field on Thursday and Friday at Saddleback Golf Course in Solon. Gilbert won the title, scoring 611 over 36 holes. Twin sisters Ava and Ella Lohrback finished 1-2 in the individual race, both finishing under par.
“It was crazy,” senior Eryn Jackson said. “I had my best round of the season, and I’m still a ways out of the top 10.
“But its alright. They are really good. To even be competing with them was nice.”
Jackson finished with a 77 card on both days.
“Walking off 18 on day two, she was like, ‘Coach, I don’t think I’ve ever broken 80,’” Coach Kahl said. “And to do that, two consecutive rounds … she had a heck of a weekend. Something to be proud of.”
Jackson said she didn’t try to do too much, just played steady golf.
“I tried not to focus on birdieing every hole,” Jackson said. “I just focused on the next shot.”
Lisbon No. 2 golfer, freshman Kyla Kahl, carded an 80 and an 86 over the two days. Which was pretty incredible when you think about it.
Kahl played 18 holes Thursday afternoon, then played in a doubleheader with Lisbon softball that night. Then played another 18 holes Friday. She also had a softball doubleheader Tuesday night.
So it was quite a week.
“It was a tiring week, but it was a lot of fun,” Kahl said.
The freshman said she was able to go from her golf swing, to a softball swing, and back, without any issues.
“She’s good at compartmentalizing the two,” Coach Kahl said. “She understands the technique. She’s got them down.”
With Jackson at 154 and Kahl at 166, the rest of the Lions included Carie Johnson (177), Avery Thurn (178), Abby Bock (191) and Grace Bausch (203).
“We know going in we were a long shot,” Kahl said. “We just wanted to showcase our skills. We worked hard to get here.
“From where we started to where we are now, everyone made big, big improvemnts. It just feels so good and such an honor to be here.”
For Jackson, who enjoyed lifting up first-place trophies with Mount Vernon volleyball and basketball this past season, it was a good end.
“Since this was my last high school event, it was nice to be playing on the last day, again,” Jackson said.
