The Mount Vernon baseball team is out to a 2-0 start this season thanks to a lot of hitting.
On Monday, May 19, in the season opener, the Mustangs won at North Scott, 6-5.
Trailing in the top of the seventh inning, Mikey Ryan reached on a hit by pitch, and Erik Lamb brought him in with a two-run home run.
Lamb was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Colin Bentley had two doubles and Garet Swartzendruber had two singles. Cael Foreman got the pitching win.
A second game was cancelled due to weather.
On Friday, May 23, Mount Vernon beat Fort Madison, 12-2, in Six innings at Ash Park.
The Mustangs piled up 13 hits. Lamb had two doubles and Swartzendruber had three RBIs. Mount Vernon (2-0) had seven stolen bases, including two for Bentley.
Five pitchers were used, with AJ McDermott recording the win.
“Our bats have come alive,” Mount Verno Coach Charles Chatman said. “We’re a veteran team this year. It is nice to win games while we are still figuring things out.”
