When you win three straight state track titles, each one is going to be a little different.
The Lisbon boys’ track team used its powerhouse sprints, and sophomore 800 sensation to win a Class 1A State Meet crown for the third consecutive year. Lisbon scored 54 points to beat Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center (ACGC) by 10 points.
There could have been panic after a dropped baton in the sprint medley Saturday morning that disqualified the Lions from an event they came in with the second-best time in 1A.
“After that little mishap we had to refocus,” Boots said. “We really locked in on the next couple events and locked in on the team title.”
Fortunately for the Lions, in the very next event, sophomore Anthony Armstrong placed fifth in the 800 in 1 minute, 55.58 seconds.
“That took pressure off some of our other open events and relays,” Boots said. “He did that in the slow heat. He got after it.”
Boots placed second, and Quinn Coleman was eighth, in the 100. Boots finished in 11 flat. William Anderson of Logan-Magnolia won it in 10.92 seconds.
Then Gage Holub finished third in the 110 hurdles in 14.39 seconds.
The Lions capped things off by finishing second in the 4×100 in 42.81 seconds. New London won in 42.50. That foursome included Quinn Coleman, Dakota Clark, Boots and Chase McFarlane.
“We had to beat ACGC in the 4×100 to lock in the team title,” Boots said. “We really focused on getting around. We could’ve maybe stretched the handoff to get that relay, but we were focused on the team and making sure we had a good, consistent race.”
The gold came Friday, when the Lions set a state record in the 4×200. Coleman, Clark, Boots and Daylin Schaefer ran that in 1:28.44.
“We were really confident going into that race,” Boots said. “We knew we’d drop a great time.”
Armstrong, so big in the 800 on Saturday, also ran the 800 anchors on the second-place distance medley and fifth-place 4×800 for the Lions.
Schaefer completed the scoring by finishing fourth in the long jump.
The threepeat matches the threepeat Lisbon pulled off from 2015 to 2017 and makes it six titles over an 11-year span.
“I’m happy with how it ended,” Boots said. “I’m hoping we set a good example for some of the younger classes coming up. A good standard for Lisbon.”
