Time capsule work starting for 150th celebration
The members of the Lisbon sesquicentennial committee would like to invite you to help make history.
This year, the City of Lisbon is celebrating its sesquicentennial – 150 years, with a weeklong celebration starting mid-August.
The committee are looking for your help to capture this moment in time to share with future generations. Our community members and business are invited to share their pictures and stories.
While the time capsule does have limits on the items that will be able to fit, we’d like to keep the request open for creativity.
• Families – Do you have last year’s holiday card, or a family photo to include? (Please include full names of each person in a photo.) Do you have a photo and/or story about the home you live in? Write a letter about your family.
• Businesses – Please send us a menu, a brochure, a write-up about your business, and/or a photo. Who works there? What is your business’ history? What do you want the future generations to know?
We ask that all items are smaller than a sheet of paper (8×11) to allow for a diverse variety of treasures from many community members and businesses. Please avoid using staples, paper clips, rubber bands as they can corrode over time and leave residue on other contents. Due to space availability, the committee will have final discretion as to what will go into the time capsule
You may drop off your items to Hills Bank in Lisbon, City Hall, or mail them to PO Box 959, Lisbon, IA 52253. PLEASE include your name and phone number in case there are any questions about your item. All items will be displayed at Hills Bank the week leading up to, and including Sauerkraut Days. The time capsule will be sealed following Sauerkraut Days, and will be re-opened in 2075.
Any questions can be directed to: Sydney Abodeely & Michelle Zaruba at 319-866-7065

Generative fiction workshop with Christine Kim
Are you a writer that is interested in improving your skills or connecting with other local writers? Have you ever wondered what it might be like to participate in a workshop at the world-renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop? Christine Kim from the Iowa Writer’s Workshop will join us at the Library to provide a workshop experience right here in Lisbon Saturday, May 10, beginning at 1 p.m.
In this two-hour long prose fiction workshop, we will engage in a series of generative writing exercises, some of which will draw inspiration and spontaneity from interactive activities adapted from improv games. This is not a lecture-based workshop, though craft topics may naturally arise in discussion. The goal of this session is for participants to walk away with fresh ideas and multiple story fragments to use after the workshop.
This workshop welcomes writers of all levels and backgrounds. Workshop exercises will require only paper, a writing utensil of choice, and active participation.
Christine Kim is a writer from Los Angeles and an MFA candidate in fiction at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. Christine has led writing workshops in Los Angeles and Singapore and is currently writing a novel.
She is a recovering former banker and writes absurd, silly stories that take place within ordinary families and conventional workplaces.
