With around a month left before school is out and summer is in full swing, the city of Lisbon is finalizing details for the summer events. Two local Lisbon students will be returning to work for the city as summer help. Evan and Quinn Coleman were approved by the council members for their second and third year with the city, respectively.
Those looking for work in the community can stop by the open hiring event for the new Lisbon Fareway on May 14. The event will take place at City Hall from 12-7pm, and they are looking for approximately 40 new hires. This will be the closest Fareway to the Lisbon community, with the other closest ones ranging from Marion, Anamosa, Cedar Rapids, North Liberty, and Iowa City.
There has been no official word on when the Fareway will be open for business, but Brandon Siggins said that it potentially will be opening on July 9. But with no official announcement, “take that for what it’s worth,” Siggins said.
On the note of employment, the Lisbon Library is putting an ad for a child or assistant librarian, due to a staff member’s move.
They are hoping to fill the position quickly, and before the library activities are in full swing for the summer.
Memorial Day will fall on a Monday this year, so the city council meeting is tentatively canceled, unless a pressing issue comes up, then the meeting will be moved to Tuesday, May 27.
Lisbon’s 150th anniversary planning is well underway, with the second planning meeting taking place last week. The celebration will be held from August 10-17, with a variety of fun activities planned for the week, including a wrestling takedown tournament, movie in the park, and scenic history walk around the city.
Hills Bank will also be preparing a time capsule, and are asking community members to bring in items, specifically family Christmas cards, local restaurant menus, and other related items. The previous time capsule sponsored by the bank will be opened during the upcoming anniversary week. Siggins said that Lisbon community members who want to get involved in the planning of the celebration still have plenty of time to do so, with the next meet- ing being held at Lisbon City Hall on May 21 at 7 p.m.
Drayton Kamberling and the Parks and Rec team have had a busy few weeks themselves, with the soccer program in peak season, and the deadline for t-ball and coach-pitch sign up approaching. Parks and Rec also hosted an Easter event on April 19, which Kamberling mentioned went very well.
With that being said, Kamberling said there has been “lots of mowing, weed eating, and working on getting the fields turned over to the schools,” in preparation for the summer season and its variety of outdoor activities.
An update coming from the Public Safety realm is the recent DEA drug drop that was on April 26. The event resulted in the Linn County Sheriff’s Office collecting over thirty pounds of unused prescription drugs that will now be safely disposed of. There is also a safe drug drop-off box located in Lisbon City Hall if residents are looking for a secure location in the future.
Furthermore, director of EMS Jacob Lindauer says that besides being busy with the CPR class season, EMS has also been working with the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation on grant funding for the program.
The programs met last week to discuss the gap in funds that rural ambulance services often face due to insurance reimbursement and other issues. “I feel like that was a very positive meeting,” Lindauer said, adding that EMS is “looking forward to the summer.”
