A collaborative effort between Cole Library, Lisbon Public Library and Morning Glory Farms drew more than 50 children and adults out to Morning Glory Farms Saturday morning.
Attendees had a chance to hear stories, sing to music along side Balderdash Ditty and then take part in three activities on the farm at the end of storytime.
“I’m so glad to have you out on our farm,” said Donna Warhover, one of the owners of Morning Glory Farms. “I’ve been a farmer here for 12 years now.”
Warhover asked if those attended loved foods like strawberries, apples and tomatoes, all of which are things that are grown at the farm located just outside of Mount Vernon.
Special musical guests Balderdash Ditty (Kim Benesh and Braden Rood) kicked off the event with their traditional opening number “Thank You For Being a Friend” followed by an adaptation of the Jason Mraz song “I’m Yours” with lyrics about the Outdoors.
Cole Library’s head librarian Grace Chamberlain Rowray read the book “Bim, Bam, Bop and Oona” by local Caldecott Award winning author Jacqueline Briggs Martin.
Balderdash Ditty came back with a song sung by the late Dale Beeks about what many different animals say, which encouraged audience participation throughout the verses.
Lisbon Library director Elizabeth Hoover de Galvez read the book “The Barnyard Dance” which also encouraged those in attendance to be up and moving with actions throughout the book.
Balderdash Ditty then closed the storytime portion of the program with “Old McDonald Had a Farm.”
Warhover guided youth to three farm based activities for the day. The first was an opportunity to feed the chickens on the Morning Glory farm. The second was the opportunity to sample some cucumbers and kohlrabi. The third was the opportunity to plant their own dwarf sunflowers to take home and grow at their own home.
The next farm storytime is slated for Saturday, Aug. 3 at Morning Glory Farms.
