No. 8 Lisbon put the bow on its Tri-Rivers East title last week. The Lions split with Central City on Monday, June 24, and swept Maquoketa Valley on Wednesday, June 26.
The Lions won the East title by four games over Calamus-Wheatland.
“Honesty, we don’t talk about conference titles much,” Lisbon coach Abby Shultz said. “That is the expectation for us.”
Against Central City, Lisbon won 14-1 in four innings, then lost 6-2.
In the opener, Kyla Kahl pitched a two-hitter over four innings. The Lions had 14 hits with Addie Clark and Chloe Clausen each supplying three. Addi Petersen hit a home run and had four RBIs.
In the loss, Lisbon had just four hits, two from Petersen.
“In game one, we got our bats going,” Shultz said. “Then they pitched their ace and we had a hard time adjusting to that in game two.”
Against Maquoketa Valley, the Lions won, 5-4 and 3-2.
“We played good softball,” Shultz said. “The second game was closer than it should have been.”
The wins were also critical because Lisbon could end up playing Maquoketa Valley in a regional semifinal on July 12, if both teams win the previous round.
“Every ball we touch, every at-bat is important from here on,” Shultz said. “It’s not just fun and games.”
Lisbon opens the postseason Wednesday, July 10, with a home game. After a rain out at Wapsie Valley on Friday, June 28, and more rain in the forecast, the Lions might not play again until then.
“I think we’ll get something,” Shultz said. “And if not, having some practices now, at this time of year, isn’t the worst thing in the world.”
