Uncommon Church, a distinctive addition to Lisbon, is led by Pastor Andrew Bee. The name itself is a conversation starter, and Pastor Andrew has an intriguing explanation.
“There is a passage in the Bible, in 1 Peter chapter 2 verse 9, that says, ‘You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…’ There is a lot packed into this verse that I get excited to talk about with people. It’s about how faith in Jesus changes people. It’s about how God sees people. It’s about a new identity that shapes people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions, Then this same verse goes on to describe a new purpose. It says, ‘that you may declare the praise of Him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.’ I like to sum it up this way: Jesus makes Uncommon People with Uncommon Purpose. That’s what I believe the church is all about, so we named the church Uncommon Church.”
There are other reasons Uncommon Church is a bit uncommon. If you show up on a Sunday morning, Pastor Andrew will probably ask questions of the audience— and he actually wants people to answer. You may even have to talk to the people around you about the biblical text for the morning. Andrew believes people understand the Bible best when interacting about it and he seelG to facilitate this even in a Sunday morning service.
UC opened in December 2021, continuing the long history of the First Federated Church, which dates back to 1880. Several First Federated members were among the first to attend Uncommon Church.
Uncommon Church is a nondenominational, God-honoring, Jesus-exalting, Bible-centered church that welcomes everyone. They believe that the Bible is the authoritative word of God, that the love and hope found in Jesus Christ change people’s lives for the better, and that together, the followers of Jesus make a difference in the world. UC has services at 10:00 AM on Sunday mornings, with youth meetings at 6:30 PM on Wednesdays. This summer, they are planning to host several community events, including a parents’ night out and a vacation Bible school for kids in partnership with Living Hope Global Methodist Church.
Information on the church and all the events can be found on the church website at www.uclisbon.church.
