Hayden Gookin pitched a perfect game Tuesday, May 28, as the fifth-ranked Mount Vernon Mustangs blanked Anamosa, 4-0.
The freshman racked up 14 strikeouts.
It was part of a big week that saw Mount Vernon go 8-0.
On Friday, May 24, Mount Vernon beat Central DeWitt, 7-0, at Van Metre Field.
Gookin scattered two hits and a walk and struck out 12.
The offense was also led by Hayden Gookin, who mashed a triple and a double. Elsa Appleton also had a double.
On Wednesday, May 29, Mount Vernon swept Independence at Mustang Way Park, 4-1 and 7-2.
In the first game, Hayden Gookin had a home run, and Olivia Haverback had two hits.
On Saturday, June 1, the Mustangs competed in the Oskaloosa Invitational at the Lacey Sports Complex. Mount Vernon beat No. 13 Albia, 3-0, Chariton, 5-2, and Oskaloosa, 13-1.
