Lisbon golfer Kaylie Kelchen, a Mount Vernon senior, was tied for fifth place after one round at the Class 3A State Meet on Thursday, May 23.
The second round Friday, May 24, was delayed due to weather. (Note: The Sun went to press early Friday afternoon due to the Memorial Day holiday)
Kelchen carded a 77 on the first day on a soggy Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.
“I didn’t start off super well,” Kelchen said. “But you can’t give up at the state tournament. And I was happy with how I finished, par-birdie-par-par-par. I’m happy I pulled it together.”
Kelchen was hopeful the final day would not get rained out – which would mean the first-round scores would stand as the final scores – because she thinks there is room to move up the leaderboard.
Kelchen finished 10th at state as a sophomore, and fourth as a junior.
“She had a very, very solid round, considering the course was pretty wet,” Lisbon coach Andy Kahl said. “It was weird, the greens were pretty fast and everything else was wet. It took 3 or 4 holes to get used to that.
“She handled herself really well. She kept herself in every hole and grinded it out.”
