The Teeling Memorial Walk-A-Thon has raised more than $22,000 this year for the Lisbon Schools, with the round-up at Brothers Market also earmarked to that cause for the month of May.
Elementary principal Justin Brown said that leading up to the final count day, the competition between elementary grades has shifted hands a number of times in the final week, as students have been raising as much as they could. There was a first prize of a movie at the Bijou for the winning class that many might have been clamoring to win. Students were also able to enjoy Kona Ice at roughly the noon period as a treat for the day, and temperatures were in a balmy 70 degrees for the walk.
At the final mark, totals raised were: fifth grade with $5,185.93, third grade with $4,013.69, second grade with $3,697.23, fourth grade with $3,143.78, first grade with $2,644.98, alternative kindergarten/kindergarten with $2,209.58, high school and community with $606.08, sixth grade with $590 and preschool with $190, for a total of $22,281.27.
Brown said he has loved how the event has evolved into something that focuses on the students at the schools and playground improvements, while still honoring the former school principal and Amanda Meeker, a long time educator at the district.
Discussion at the school board meeting in May was on the potential need for drainage improvements to the playground area at the elementary school and potential installation of concrete in that playground space that may be needed. The costs for that are not known at the moment, but may be presented in early July.
