Wow. Another school year is coming to a close, and Lisbon, Mount Vernon and Cornell are graduating another class. In this week’s Sun, you’ll see the Mount Vernon and Lisbon senior roundtables and coverage of Cornell College’s graduation.
The editor again has to commend these schools for the ways they have been involved in the community. There was the Chalk the Walk in early May where we had images from seniors like Penelope Vig and classmates showing off their artwork. The band programs at both Lisbon and Mount Vernon continue to excel in jazz and marching band competitions. Each sports season is an opportunity that we’re going to see state champions on our sports page or really phenomenal seasons.
And yet, so many of these students in roundtables spoke not about those memories as the things they’re going to remember most, but more the time they spend with their classmates and friends at those competitions. The travel to these competitions, the opportunities in things like adverse weather that force them to take minutes to slow down and wait for activities to start after the rain has passed once more.
Sure, this year has been another year of transition. The Armstrong Family Activities Complex opened at Mount Vernon High School this year, and the walls have started going up on the new weight room and career and technical education wing additions at Lisbon among things that have happened.
And through it all, these students have shown their continued engagement with their communities.
As we’ve noted in the past, students from Lisbon, Mount Vernon and Cornell – We know that wherever you focus your energies and engagement in the future, you will do exceptional things and bring the values and love this community has instilled in your lives. Congratulations to you and much success to you in your future endeavors. This community will always be rooting for you.
