Sophomore Lillian Gaiser had the lone goals on an assist from Kennedy Moore.
Cana Safo recorded the shutout in goal with four saves.
“A good solid win, but could have been a lot more if we hit the target more,” Mount Vernon Coach Brandon Savage said. “Overall, I’m happy with how we have finished the regular season off.”
Earlier in the week, Mount Vernon blanked West Delaware 10-0 on Tuesday, May 7. Against the Hawks, Timber Scholl, Clare Nydegger, Peyton Simpson and Miranda Sellner each had two goals, with one each from Addison Mullis and Kennedy Moore.
Isabelle Logue, Nydegger and Kennedy Moore each had two assists, with one from Sellner.
Mount Vernon (9-7) opens postseason play with a Class 2A quarterfinal against Oskaloosa (3-10) on Friday, May 17, at Armstrong Field. The winner plays at No. 6 Xavier (7-3) on Tuesday, May 21, in Cedar Rapids.
“We have won four in a row going into the postseason,” Savage said. “We are looking to continue our good form and move on to the semifinals.”
Boys
The Mustangs closed the regular season with a 6-0 win over West Delaware on Tuesday, May 7, at Armstrong Field.
“I felt the entire team was able to go out and send off the seniors the right away,” Mount Vernon Coach Nate Grosse said.
It was a special night, since senior Will Errignton, who is recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in football, was able to start the match off with the kickoff.
“It was something he more than deserved to be able to do for a team he means so much to,” Grosse said.
Jaxon Anderson and Matthew Mayhew each had two goals in the win, with Carter Gadberry and Lukas Schrock adding one each. Assists were provided by Luke Stephens (2), Mayhew and Caleb Bartelt.
Mount Vernon (7-8) opens the postseason with a Class 3A semifinal on Monday, May, 20 against Cedar Rapids Washington (9-7) at Kingston Stadium.
The Warriors beat the Mustangs, 4-0, back on April 13.
“That was our third match in 24 hours, so I know we weren’t able to show who we really are,” Grosse said. “And I know we have also grown a lot as a team since then.”
