The Lisbon boys’ track team is poised to defend their title this week at the State Meet after a strong performance at a Class 1A state qualifying meet Thursday, May 9, in Brooklyn. The Lisbon girls’ won a title, too.
In addition, the Mount Vernon girls’ team should have enough firepower to chase a title after they ran at the Class 3A state qualifier Thursday, May 9, in Manchester.
The Lion boys’ won the team title at the state qualifier with 174 points, easily outpacing runner-up BCLUW, which had 71.5 points at the 14-team event.
“Only one small hiccup with Jonah (Reiling) not qualifying in the discus,” Lisbon Coach Lonnie Speidel said. “Every other event we thought would qualify did.”
Lisbon won four relay titles (4×800, 4×200, 4×100, sprint medley) and placed second in two others (shuttle hurdle and 4×400), and third in the distance medley.
The Lions ended up qualifying in all but the shuttle hurdle.
“We’ll have to score well in the sprints and sprint relays,” Speidel said.
Baylor Speidel won two individual titles (100, 200). Other winners included Daylin Schaefer (long jump), Gage Holub (110 hurdles), Michael Gadberry (800).
“Mt. Ayer, Bellevue, Woodbine and Madrid are all in contention as well,” Speidel said. “Our field events will need to step up and score well also if we want to win.”
The Lisbon girls track team won the team title at the Class 1A state qualifier. It was a little closer.
Lisbon scored 104.5 team points to beat BCLUW, which was just one point back.
“We kind of gave a speech before that every spot matters,” Lisbon Coach Brett Epperly said. “If someone gets in front of you, you go get them. If someone is behind you, stay ahead of them.”
The team title came down to the final race, the 4×400. Epperly said anchor Leila Mayhew got passed by a runner from Lynnville-Sully, then passed her back before the finish.
“That made the difference,” Epperly said.
The other girls on the 4×400 included Maeve Krogmann, Ava Ahrendsen and Emma Pleasant.
OF course, they only had to finish fifth thanks to the 4×100 relay winning gold the event prior.
That foursome included Brynn Epperly, Ava Czarnecki, Addie Clark and Addy Happel.
“Those four girls have been running together all year,” Epperly said. “The cohesiveness between them is strong. They have a personal goal of dropping their time every time we run.”
Those four also won the 4×200 and sprint medley.
Individual champions included Czarnecki (long jump) and Happel (200).
What it all adds up to is the Lion girls may have a chance to collect a trophy this week in Des Moines.
“We know what we can do, we just need to execute,” Epperly said. “All you need is a shot. In my opinion, we have as good of shot as anybody.”
Mount Vernon
The Mustang girls’ followed up their WaMaC crown with a dominant win at West Delaware. Mount Vernon scored 180 points, outrunning Dubuque Wahlert (126.5) and Western Dubuque (102) at the eight-team qualifier.
“We were just trying to get as many events as possible through to the State Meet,” Mount Vernon coach Kory Swart said. “We were able to get 15 events in, 13 on auto-qualifier, and two others at-large. I’m really excited and happy for the girls.”
Mount Vernon swept the field events, with Libby Dix winning the shot put and discus, Sydney Maue winning the high jump, and Lucy Wischmeyer winning the long jump.
And as a bonus, Elsa Appleton finished second in the long jump, despite a year-long battle with a bad back.
“Elsa surprised me the most,” Swart said. “There were only eight entrants, so she decided to chance it, at least one time to score team points.
“Her first jump was not good, so she decided to take one more, and qualified for state.”
Swart was mentioned that Dix improved enough in the shot put throughout the year to perhaps score points at state. She is ranked sixth going to Des Moines.
“Coming into the year, I’m not sure we were expecting that,” Swart said. “Every point counts.”
Other gold medals included the 4×800, Evelyn Moeller in the 800, Eastin Whisner in the 400 hurdles, and Kiersten Swart in the 1,500.
The Mustangs qualified five relays, all with top 10 times. Caliana Whitaker qualified in the 200 and 400.
It sets up for an interesting three days at Drake Stadium.
“There are six or seven teams that can make a run at the state title, and we’re one of them,” Swart said. “It is going to be tight, and we’ll have to have a few things go our way.”
The Mount Vernon boys’ track team had a strong evening and will have seven entries at state track. The Mustangs finished third at the state qualifier with 94 points. Western Dubuque won it going away (172), followed by Center Point-Urbana (121).
The Mustangs didn’t win any events, but Grady Olberding is ranked in the Top 4 for state in both the 3,200 and 1,600, and the 4×800 is ranked fifth after running a season-best 8:12.78.
“Grady ran really well,” Mount Vernon Coach Ryan Whitman said. “It was a great night for us overall, and I was really pleased with how all the guys ran.”
Jackson Kutcher hit a personal record in the high jump at 6-foot-2, finished second, and qualified for state. Stanley Krob was second in the long jump and also qualified.
