If you have children or grandchildren, today’s column is for you. Before you get too cozy grab your phone or calendar to mark these dates, because you will not want to miss the programs and events we have going on at Cole Library this summer.
The summer reading program theme is “Read, Renew, Repeat and programs begins June 4. You can sign up at Hills Bank the night of the kickoff party on Thursday, May 16 from 5-6:30 or Cole library at the first-floor circulation desk starting May 17. Hills Bank is sponsoring Summer Reading.
Kids Summer Reading Program:
Sign up for the Summer Reading Program at Cole Library after May 16 and receive this year’s t-shirt. During June-July, every time you come to the library you will get an entry slip to place in a box in front of the prize you hope to win at the end of the summer. Entry slips are handed out at the first floor circulation desk. The more you come to the library the greater your chances of winning!
Teen Summer Reading Program:
Middle and high school patrons, read books to get books! Sign up at the kickoff or the first floor circulation desk and pick up a reading log. For every 500 pages you read, select a book from our Teen Summer Reading shelf. Maximum of 10 books per participant.
Weekly programs we are having this summer are:
TUESDAY LEGO CLUB: Every Tuesday at 10 a.m., starting June 4, we will have Lego Club on the second floor of the library. We have thousands of Legos to build with. You just need to bring your creativity.
WEDNESDAY WORKSHOPS:
Every Wednesday, June 5 through July 31, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., outside or in Room 108. This summer our workshops have a conservation/recycling focus to connect with our Summer Reading Program theme: Read, Renew, Repeat. Each workshop has two sessions available: 10 a.m. & 11 a.m.. STORY TIME: Throughout the summer, Story Time continues to meet in the Browsing Room on the library’s first floor every Thursday morning at 9:30am. We read stories, sing songs, and make a simple craft. No Story Time on July 4th, the library is closed in honor of Independence Day.
Special programs this summer at the library are:
Big Bang Bubbles: Monday, June 10 at 10 a.m. on second floor
A highly-skilled bubbleologists will dazzle you with fire, bubble fog, and a nearly perfect cube bubble. This exciting, free educational show will take ordinary bubbles to the extreme and teach you all about the science behind bubbles. No sign up – just come enjoy the show.
Family Movie Night: Trolls Band Together Sing-a-long
Tuesday, July 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 108
Join the Troll’s band and sing along at Cole Library! Make a microphone craft and sing along to the movie Trolls Band Together (PG). No registration is required, just come enjoy the movie.
A Family Event with Beekeeper Julie Rice -Tuesday, July 23, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Room 108
Come learn about the fascinating honeybee! Julie Rice, a beekeeper and teacher, will share information about the different types of bees, their roles in the hive, and their role in our lives and communities. This hands-on program is free and does not require registration.
BUTTERFLY NURSERY: Once the monarchs arrive in Iowa, we will set up a nursery on the first floor again so we can enjoy the miracle of butterflies.
