Bridge work begins along Springville Road
A bridge rehabilitation project is scheduled to start the week of May 6 on Springville Road north of Mount Vernon over Abbe Creek. Traffic delays are possible during the first week of the project.
Springville Road will be closed to all traffic starting May 8. A detour will be posted for this project.
The project is expected to last five weeks.
Motorists are reminded to comply with all traffic signs around construction projects. Do not drive around the barricades in place to protect the public and road crews.
Girl Scouts service project
Girl Scout Troop 1966 is completing a silver award project by collecting donations for the Catholic Worker House for use in their emergency housing shelter. Catholic Worker House works to help people get back on their feet after experiencing homelessness and constantly need these items: multipurpose spray cleaners, bathroom cleaners, bleach, dryer sheers, floor cleaner, anti-bacterial wipes, garbage bags, sponges, magic erasers, micro fiber cloths, dish washer pods, coffee/creamer/sugar, diapers (all sizes), dish soap, dish washer pods, Febreze Fabric freshener, Glade plug-ins and extra scents, Lysol spray, paper towels, Pine-Sol or other floor cleaners, shampoo/conditioner, toilet paper, toothpaste, wipes and women’s deodorant.
The troop have put boxes for collecting these items at various locations around Lisbon and Mount Vernon, including Gary’s Foods, Ace Hardware, the schools, many of the churches and First Street Community Center. Collection boxes will be out until May 29.

WETAP Year end party
Join Washington Elementary Teachers and Parents for the second annual end-of-year party Friday, May 17 from 5-8 p.m. at Washington Elementary Track (rain location is Washington Elementary gymnasium). This event is free to all WE students, families, and teachers so that we can celebrate the close of another wonderful school year.
Llamas, bounce house, inflatable obstacle course, popcorn, popsicles, and more will be available.
Onsite food vendors will also be available for purchase.

Mount Vernon softball camp
Mount Vernon Schools will be holding a softball camp Monday, May 27. The camp will be available for third through seventh graders from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and a pitching and catching session from 11 a.m. to noon. Cost is $60 for the camp only or $75 for the camp and pitching and catching session.
Goals of the camp are to have each camper leave with a better understanding of fundamentals, improved individual skills, greater softball knowledge, and a positive team experience.
Defensively the camp will focus on throwing and catching mechanics, outfield and infield fundamentals, all defensive positions, and defensive strategies.
Offensively the camp will focus on base running, sliding, hitting, bunting, slapping, and an aggressive offensive mindset.

Mount Vernon fourth through sixth grade volleyball camp
Mount Vernon Schools will be holding a volleyball camp for youth in fourth through sixth grades June 3 through 5. Fifth and sixth grade camp will run 10 a.m. to noon and fourth grade camp will run 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Cost for fourth grade camp is $35 and cost for the fifth/sixth grade camp is $40. Registration deadline is May 24 to guarantee a t-shirt is available. The camp will help students learn skills, IQ and mindset of Mount Vernon Volleyball. Registration can be paid via PowerSchools.
Mount Vernon boys’ basketball camp
The Mount Vernon Schools will hole a boys basketball camp June 3-6 for third through 12th graders at Mount Vernon High School. High school camp will run from 8 to 10 a.m., sixth through eighth graders 10:15 a.m. to noon and third through fifth graders from noon to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $70 per individual. Mount Vernon Middle School library open during summer
The Mount Vernon Middle School Library will be offering open library hours on for incoming fifth through outgoing eighth graders to continue checking out books to read over the summer. They are also offering a free summer book club for students to participate in. ALL students are welcome to check out materials from the library even if they don’t participate in book club. Families can find more information about the book club on the announcements section of the Middle School website, or by contacting Mrs. Stanerson at [email protected]. The library will be open 10-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and July (closed on June 25 and July 4).
Lisbon schools basketball camp
Lisbon Schools will be offering a basketball camp June 10 through June 14. The camp is open to youth entering alternative kindergarten through eighth grade. AK through second grade the camp will run 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. each day. Third through fifth grade will run 1 to 2 p.m. and sixth through eight grade will run 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. Cost for the camp is $30 for AK through second graders and $40 for third through eighth graders. Registration deadline is May 17 to guarantee a t-shirt.
The camp will focus on providing knowledge of shooting, dribbling, passing, footwork with offensive and defensive fundamentals. We will focus on transferable skills, model work ethic and good sportsmanship while enjoying the game of basketball.

Lisbon’s water quality report for 2023 is now available at city hall, city Facebook page, city website and at iowaccr.org/lisbon.
School supply distribution
Sign-up has begun for Southeast Linn Community Center’s annual school supply distribution. Free supplies and backpacks are available to Lisbon and Mount Vernon students, as well as students who are homeschooled in those communities. Pre-registration is required at selinn.org or by calling 319-455-2844. Those who register by Friday, May 31, will be entered into a drawing for a gift card. Distribution will be on Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 4-6 p.m. at the Lester Buresh Center in Mount Vernon. Community members interested in supporting this event can provide a financial donation, contribute supplies, or volunteer.
