Mount Vernon orchestra, Mount Vernon band and Mount Vernon choirs hosted large group music contests Friday, May 3, at Mount Vernon High School and Mount Vernon Middle Schools. Schools competing at the Mount Vernon site included Cedar Rapids Xavier, Center Point Urbana, Williamsburg, Benton Community, Clear-Creek Amana, Vinton-Shellsburg, Solon and Mount Vernon. Performances ran until 10 p.m.
Mount Vernon mixed choir performed “Rest Not” by Laura Farnell and Omnia Sol by Z. Randall Stroope. Treble Clef Chorus performed “Speak to the Child of Love” by Allen Koepke, “Artza Alinu by Earlene Rentz and “Song of Miriam” by Elaine Hagenberg. The third Mount Vernon choir performed “Sicul Cervus” by Giovanni Pierlugi da Palestrina, “Love Then and Still” by Susan Labarr and “I Don’t Feel No Ways Tired” by Stacey V. Gibbs.
Mount Vernon orchestra performed “Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana” by Pietro Mascagni and “City of Steel” by Doug Spata.
Mount Vernon concert band performed “Tudor Sketches” by William Owens and “River of Life” by Steven Reineke.
All three choirs, Mount Vernon Orchestra and Mount Vernon Band received straight Division Is at the contest. Mount Vernon orchestra is directed by Tabitha Rasmussen. Mount Vernon concert band is directed by Scott Weber. Mount Vernon choirs are directed by Thad Wilkins.
