On Monday, May 13 at 1 p.m. in Room 108, Cole Public Library will screen the movie Killers of the Flower Moon.
Alongside being an Academy Award winning film based on a best-selling book, this movie is interesting for another reason: it has not been released on DVD. To show this film, we will be watching it through a streaming service.
Over the last few years, fewer and fewer movies and television shows are being released on DVD – largely in favor of requiring viewers to use (and purchase) streaming services. This presents a particular issue for libraries, as our ability to acquire the movies and TV show our patrons want dwindles. To screen movies, libraries must purchase a public performance license. So, while we have the license to show a ton of movies, there are many that we can’t purchase on DVD for our patrons to check out and take home.
Matinee Movies is great work around for this. Although we wish we could stock more DVDs on our shelves, this program offers our patrons the chance to watch these films free at their pubic library.
