Mount Vernon girls’ track won the Anamosa Invitational on Tuesday, April 23.
The Mustangs outshined the field with 174 team points, and were followed by Mid-Prairie (141) and Anamosa (79). Lisbon was fourth with 63 points.
Mount Vernon won 12 events. The Mustangs swept the field events, with Libby Dix winning the shot put and discus, Sydney Maue winning the high jump and Lucy Wischmeyer winning the long jump.
Caliana Whitaker won the 100 and 400, Eastin Whisner won the 400 hurdles, Evelyn Moeller won the 800 and Kiersten Swart won the 1,500.
“Cali ran the fastest time of her career in the 400,” Mount Vernon Coach Kory Swart said. “Evelyn took eight seconds off her previous best time in the 800. Kiersten took 15 seconds off her PR in the 1,500.”
In addition, the Mustangs won five relays – 4×200, 4×400, 4×800, distance medley and shuttle hurdle.
“This should help them gain quite a bit of confidence as we move into championship season,” Swart said.
The Lisbon girls won the 4×200 and 4×100 relays with the same foursome (in different order) – Addy Happel, Ava Czarnecki, Brynn Epperly and Addie Clark.
The Mount Vernon and Lisbon boys’ track teams finished in a tie for third with 83 team points, behind Central DeWitt (132) and Monticello (85).
“It ended up being a great night to run,” Mount Vernon coach Ryan Whitman said. “We had quite a few PRs, which was nice to see.”
Grady Olberding won the only gold for the Mustangs, winning the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 42.70 seconds.
The Lions had three event winners. Daylin Schaefer won the long jump (21 feet, 3 inches), Tiernan Boots won the 100 (11.38 seconds), and the Lions won the 4×400 with a relay that included Dakota Clark, Reid Fridley, Baylor Speidel and Michael Gadberry.
