No flags were brought home by Mount Vernon or Lisbon from the Drake Relays last weekend, but there were some standout performances.
It starts with Mount Vernon’s Sydney Maue placing second in the girls’ high jump (5-foot-7).
“The high-level competition seems to bring out the best in her, which is fun to watch,” Mount Vernon girls track coach Kory Swart said.
Other place winners for the Mustang girls included Eastin Whisner in the 400 hurdles (seventh in 1:05.22) and Libby Dix in the discus (eighth, 127-3).
“Eastin set a PR in the 400 hurdles,” Swart said. “The future is bright of her as it was only her third time running the event.”
The Mustangs also set a season-best in the 4×100 (51.08 seconds) and the 4×800 (9:35.29).
The top finisher for the Lisbon boys was Daylin Schaefer in the long jump, with a leap of 21 feet, 11 inches, good for eighth place.
“It was a great experience for Daylin, since he had never competed at Drake or State before,” Lisbon Coach Lonnie Speidel said.
Baylor Speidel finished ninth in the boys’ 100, and missed qualifying for the finals by .01 seconds.
The Lions could hang their hat on beating most of the other 1A schools in Des Moines.
“We finished ahead of every 1A competitor in every event except the shot put, with our best race being out 1A-leading 4×100,” Speidel said.
