The Mount Vernon girls’ soccer team got a convincing 10-0 win over South Tama on Tuesday, April 23, then lost to undefeated and No. 9 (Class 1A) Center Point-Urbana on Thursday, April 25, 3-1.
“We were unlucky to miss a penalty kick to tie the game up with 15 minutes to go,” Mount Vernon Coach Brandon Savage said. “The scoreline isn’t a true reflection of our performance. We deserved to get more out of the game.”
Timber School had the lone Mustang goal against CPU. School also scored four times against South Tama. Mount Vernon is now 5-7.
Boys
The Mount Vernon boys lost a tough one to South Tama, 1-0, on Tuesday, April 23, at Armstrong Field, but bounced back to top Independence, 3-1, on Friday, April 26.
“That South Tama match was a tough result to take, because we felt we controlled large portions of that match, but couldn’t find the end product,” Mount Vernon Coach Nathan Grosse said. “We had a goal called back and then gave up a late goal off a corner.”
Mount Vernon outshot South Tama 18 to 4. TJ Nosbisch made five saves in goal.
“We really felt we deserved more from the match, but that is soccer,” Grosse said. “We have to continue to work to find a way to put away chances we create.”
Mount Vernon (4-7) trailed Independence at halftime, 1-0, but scored three times in the second half.
“We were able to stay locked in on how we wanted to play, continued to create chances, and were able to put three in the net,” Grosse said.
Lukas Schrock, Jaxson Anderson, and Caleb Bartelt scored the goals with and Matthew Mayhew and Bartlet providing assists.
