The Mount Vernon boys’ soccer team got off the schneid Friday, April 19, with a 1-0 win over Vinton-Shellsburg at Armstrong Field.
The win halted a six-game losing streak and improves their record to 3-6. Gavin Plathe scored the winning goal with less than three minutes left.
“Gavin’s goal was a well hit ball, and helped secure the result in a match that we had the better of the play and really deserved the result,” Mount Vernon coach Nate Grosse said. “It doesn’t always work out that way in soccer, and after a few tough matches in a row, it was super exciting to see the boys get the win.”
Earlier in the week, the Mustangs lost 3-0 at Center Point-Urbana, in a game that was delayed a day by the weather.
“The match was closer than the score-line would indicate,” Grosse said. “Once we went down a player in the second half, it was tough to find our way back into the match.”
Girls
The Mount Vernon girls’ soccer team dropped a pair of WaMaC matches last week, losing at Independence on Thursday, April 18, 4-0, and falling at Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday, April 19, 2-0.
“Unfortunately for both games we didn’t have our full squad,” Mount Vernon coach Brandon Savage said. “We had a total of 13 girls. The girls still battled hard and put in some good performances.”
A third match against Center Point-Urbana scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, was postponed to Thursday, April 25 at Armstrong Field.
Mount Vernon fell to 4-6.
