The Missions Committee of the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon is hosting a hunger awareness event Sunday, April 28. The event will be at the UMC Fellowship hall beginning at 1 p.m.
“Hunger is at an all-time high in Iowa,” said Jennifer Hoffman. “Come and hear how nonprofits and supporters like UMCMV are working to combat this crisis as well as learn about the challenges these organizations face.”
The hour long discussion will help educate the community about the issues faced locally for combatting hunger in our community.
“Our hope is to help raise awareness and offer ideas and opportunities for organizations and individuals to collaborate and help fight hunger in our communities,” Hoffman said.
Locally, SELCC notes the food pantry is utilized by roughly 10 percent of the Mount Vernon/Lisbon community and the costs for stocking the food pantry have increased 500 percent since 2020.
UMCMV, alongside Gary’s Foods, partners for quarterly food drives to support SELCC.
Speaking at the panel will be Nicole McAlexander, director of Southeast Linn Community Center, Kim Guardado, director of HACAP Food Bank and a representative from the Iowa Hunger Coalition.
Cookies and drinks will be provided. If you have questions, please contact the UMCMV church office at 319-895-6286.
