Cornell’s men took a big step toward another postseason berth with Saturday’s 12-5 triumph over Midwest Lacrosse Conference foe Northland at Ponzio Stadium.
Luke Baldwin and Charley Kobets netted five goals apiece to power the Rams, who climbed into a third-place tie with Northwestern with one MLC contest remaining.
The top four teams qualify for the MLC Tournament, which begins May 1.
The Rams turned it on in the second half after Northland pulled within 5-3. Cornell scored five unanswered goals during a 12-minute stretch – three from Kobets and two by Baldwin – to take control of the game.
Baldwin struck three times in the fourth quarter and equaled his career high for goals in a game. Talented first-year player Kobets also established a personal high for goals scored and dished one assist.
Matt Norwood and Landon Card tallied one goal apiece. Tyler Foster, Brandon Warnke, Caden Lynch and Norwood each had one assist.
The Rams converted all 15 of their clear attempts in the final three quarters and held a 39-30 advantage in total shots. Goalie Thomas Cook recorded 14 saves. Torii Greiskalns totaled five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
