The Mount Vernon girls’ track team finished second at the Jesse Day Relays on Thursday, April 11, at Brady Street Stadium in Davenport.
“The weather was not very kind to us, but it did provide us an opportunity to compete in adverse conditions,” Mount Vernon Coach Kory Swart said. “You never know what the weather will be like for championship season, so this could help us prepare for that scenario.”
Sydney Maue (5-4) and Paige Schurbon (5-2) both set season-bests in the high jump, and placed 1-2. Other gold medal winners included Libby Dix (discus), the shuttle hurdle and 4×400 relays.
Saturday, April 13, at the Eastern Iowa Track & Field Festival at Iowa City West, the Mustangs got some big wins in a big field.
Dix came up one inch short of the school record while winning the discus with a toss of 140 feet, 11 inches.
“She’s been working hard to knock that off the board, and this will serve as motivation,” Swart said.
The 4×800 team all ran personal records and finished in a season-best combined time of 9:39.62. The 4×400 team cut five seconds off its season-best (4:04.68).
Swart also praised Claire Jensen, who “came from about 100 meters down to help win (the distance medley).”
“We had a lot of things to be proud of and can really build upon,” Swart said.
Lisbon also had a few runners at the Festival. The sprint medley team of Brynn Epperly, Ava Czarnecki, Addy Happel and Addie Clark broke the school record in the sprint medley in 1:54.08. They had originally broke the record Thursday with a time of 1:54.26.
