Cornell’s women’s lacrosse team used a 6-1 game-ending run to secure the program’s first-ever series win over Northwestern, 16-9, Saturday at Reynolds Field.
The Rams jumped into sole possession of third place in the MLC race at 2-1 and improved to 12-2 overall. Northwestern (5-7 overall) dipped to 1-2 in the MLC.
Cornell boosted its season goals total to 195, which is a new school record with still two regular-season contests to go.
Cornell’s high-powered attack was paced again by the dynamic duo of Cece Zanoni and India Smith, combining for 15 points in the contest. Zanoni broke loose for eight goals, two shy of her own single-game school record. She found the back of the net six times during a dominant second half.
Smith delivered five goals and two assists, while also leading the team with six ground balls. Sabrina Ibanez pitched in two goals and one assist. Anna Methe scored once and assisted on two goals. Meg Lewis won eight draw controls.
Goalie Hannah Miech worked all 60 minutes for her 12th victory. She had 12 saves.
Leading 10-8 late in the third quarter, the Rams sprinted to the finish by scoring six times over the final 17 minutes.
Earlier in the week, Cornell won 11-9 against MSOE.
