Mount Vernon girls’ soccer recorded its first win of the season, taking down Hwy. 1 rival Solon, 2-1, on Tuesday, April 2.
Snow and freezing rain fell for most of the game.
Junior Clare Nydegger and sophomore Lillian Gaiser scored goals.
“First conference game and everyone had a great performance,” Mount Vernon coach Brandon Savage said.
Gaiser’s goal, on a breakaway in the second half, was needed insurance since Sofia Ortega hit a late goal for the Spartans.
Cana Safo had 11 saves for Mount Vernon.
The Mustangs also lost to No. 11 (2A) Iowa City Liberty, 8-0, on Thursday, April 4.
“That was a tough team to play against,” Savage said. “I wish them all the best.”
Mount Vernon then closed out its busy week with a 5-0 victory over Benton Community on Friday, April 5 at the Martha Parsons Activities Complex.
Nydegger had two goals and an assist to pace the offense. Timber Scholl, Adeline Whisner and Kennedy Moore also recorded goals, and Scholl, Renae Woods and Keira Bergmann had assists. Mount Vernon (2-3) had 16 shots on goal. Safo had two saves and recorded the shutout in goal.
