The Mount Vernon girls finished in a tie for third at the Jane Astor Relays on Friday, April 5, at Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin.
“The meet went super quickly,” Mount Vernon coach Kory Swart said. “We were just really happy that our kids were able to respond well on short rest.”
The Mustangs won three of the four field events, with Sydney Maue winning the high jump (5-foot-3) and Libby Dix claiming both shot put (37 feet) and discus (138 feet, 2 inches).
“Libby surpassed the blue standard of 132 feet and automatically qualified for Drake,” Swart said. “On top of that, she threw a two-foot personal record in the shot put.
“Sydney had her best performance of the year, jumping 5-3.”
The meet was separated into large schools (Class A) and small schools (Class B), but they were both thrown together for relays, and in team scoring.
The Mustangs piled up some points in the relays, winning the 4×100 and 4×800.
Caliana Whitaker anchored the 4×100 relay, and also won gold in the open 100. The other members of the relay were Lillian Wischmeyer, Lucy Wischmeyer and Kara Swantz.
“They had some great handoffs and were able to get the victory,” Swart said.
