Mount Vernon girls’ soccer dropped its first two matches, falling to Cedar Rapids Prairie, 1-0, on Tuesday, March 28, at Armstrong Field, and losing at Anamosa, 4-3, in extra time on Thursday, March 28.
The loss to Prairie on a cold, windy March night came down to the final minutes.
“We missed a penalty kick to tie the game up with five minutes left,” coach Brandon Savage said. “A great performance considering the class difference.”
Against Anamosa, Courtney Franck scored two goals and Izzy Logue had one. Emme Miller had one assist.
“We were the better team with over 20 shots, but just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net in normal time and overtime,” Savage said.
Mount Vernon junior midfielder Clare Nydegger (14) and freshman forward Timber Scholl (7) turn up field in front of Cedar Rapids Prairie defender McKenna Mueller in a season-opening match Tuesday, March 26, at Armstrong Field in Mount Vernon.
