It is now easier to locate the grave of a loved one in Lisbon Cemetery.
The website now has a link to the Lisbon Cemetery Global Positioning Satellite program. It’s a project that Marsha Lasack has been working on for more than a year to make sure that every grave in the cemetery was appropriately mapped.
City administrator Brandon Siggins said that the city will have QR code signage up at the entrance of the cemetery soon, and those with smart phones will be able to pull up the location of the grave on their smart phones to better be able to find the grave in the cemetery.
“It’s really beneficial to people who have not been able to visit their loved ones grave frequently and forget exactly where the grave is located,” Siggins said. “They’ll be able to search the GIS database by last name and find where the headstone is located.”
Mayor Doug O’Connor said they were appreciative of the work that went into this project.
“I don’t know many communities that have something like this,” O’Connor said.
Council member Mike Williams agreed. He asked if there were plans as well to include the information at the Lisbon History Center, another avenue people doing genealogical research may visit.
Siggins said that members of the public works department had helped with the mapping of the cemetery, and moving forward this will help people see what plots are currently available and where the city is not currently selling plots of land.
