Mount Vernon activities director Matt Thede plans to have a new football coach hired by the middle of April.
“We’re going to get after it,” Thede said. “The sooner we can get it, the better.”
Lance Pedersen announced last week he was taking the head football coaching position at Clear Creek Amana, effective July 1. He leaves the Mustangs after 10 years and a 78-30 record, with seven playoff trips.
“I definitely wish him the best,” Thede said. “I appreciate the way the program is left.”
Thede said Wednesday, March 20, he planned to meet with the assistant coaches. He hopes they’ll be interested in sticking around.
“Lance put together a heck of a staff,” Thede said. “From an administrator perspective, and from a dad perspective, I’m really proud and excited about the people we have on staff.”
Thede’s plan was to have the job posted Thursday, March 21, and to keep it open for two weeks. He’ll review applications as they come in, and set up interviews for the week starting April 8, and hopefully have a decision by the end of that week.
Thede started as AD after Pedersen was already in place, so it’ll be the first chance for him to hire a football coach.
“I think it is one of the most important jobs I have, to hire good people,” Thede said. “Lance has left some big shoes to fill.”
Of course, the principal, superintendent, school board and many others will weigh in during the process.
“The number one priority is being a part of something bigger than themselves,” Thede said. “We have 17 other programs and a bunch of other activities that we are proud of in the Mount Vernon school district. Hopefully this person can see the big picture.”
